Biofencing in Sweden: A sustainable, natural alternative to wire fences

During my time in Sweden for the LocoForest International Training, I had the chance to observe biofencing at Johnhopingf Park. Unlike in Nepal, where we mainly use wire fences, biofencing here involves using deformed logs as a natural barrier. The logs are arranged to create a fence that blends with the environment, providing a more sustainable and visually pleasing solution. In Nepal, wire fences can disrupt the landscape and harm the environment, while biofencing in Sweden seemed to work in harmony with nature, helping to preserve the land and supporting biodiversity. This approach made me think about how we could adapt similar methods in Nepal for more eco-friendly fencing options.

Women at the Core of Forest Sustainability

Women nurture nature so that it can persist for future generations.
Women connect with nature and are conscious of its power in many forms. One is to augment the family’s income while simultaneously providing for subsistence needs through the collection of forest products. Women spend more time than males harvesting forest products like fuel, food, and fodder as well as in conserving forest, water, and land resources especially in rural areas, to meet family needs, therefore they have a stronger bond with nature than men do.

However, it is still debatable whether women have an equal voice in decision-making when it comes to the sustainable use of land, water, and other natural resources as they often contribute as primary caregivers, land managers, and resource consumers.

Promoting gender equality and empowering women and girls can have a transformative impact on a wide range of sectors, including forestry, climate change mitigation, adaptation, ensuring food security and improved health outcomes.

I was randomly taking pictures of Sindhupalchowk’s fragile hills, which have a long history of disasters like landslides and earthquakes, during the baseline survey for the project Economic Empowerment of Women through Forest Solutions in Sindhupalchowk. ForestAction Nepal IDRC / CRDI

My gaze fixed on the scene of the hills for a long time. I initially noticed undulating green hills, scattered houses, and rocky edges around the trees. But when I started to shape it on the basis of my life learnings, I connected it with how one’s life struggles, limitations, and boundaries constrict people on small edges.

The prejudices, limitations, stereotypes, inaccessibility, and myriad other obstacles that one encounters in life are represented by the rough and dry edges that encircle the trees.

But despite all these visible and invisible walls, the person who has a progressive mindset will grow either way. The lush green forest in between these rocky edges gave me hope that no matter where your roots are or the limited resources you have, you tend to grow and flourish if you decide to keep on going and pursue your dreams avidly within the walls too.

Our positive outlook on life is what propels us forward. If the seeds of these trees were pessimistic about the space and the unfavorable conditions here, they wouldn’t have grown up to be this dense and green.

It’s all up to us whether we see the glass as half filled or half-empty.
